Enlisting and Providing Support

  • Questions you have with which your colleagues may be able to provide help and support
My plans is to increase parental involvement within urban schools;

  1. What are some way I can include parents into the school environment?
  2. How would you present your presentation to parents, teachers, and administration?
  3. How would you approach parents that have an answer to why they can't be involved?
  • Resources and information you are seeking
Seeking resources and information that will help increase my chances to provide the parents, and teachers that shows the importance of parental involvement.   Resource like parenting programs, and community programs that helps parents and teachers to develop stronger communication.
  • Resources and/or information you have found helpful and insightful
The most helpful insight I obtained was actually speaking to the teachers and parents about the disparity with being involved in their child education.   Also, I found a website that helped me develop my advocacy plan with great organization.  Overall, I think I'm prepared to present my advocacy plan.   If you could please provide me some suggestions to my questions that is listed above...

 Thanks

Lamon,
I have heard many reasons why parents can not be involved in their child's education. One method that I have used is providing the parents with activities to do at home and return to school with their child. Not all parents return the activity however by providing them other opportunities to be involved is helpful. Another method you can use is by sending out a questioniare asking how the parent can be involved basically asking what hours they could come in or if after school activities are better for them given that most parents work now. This could help the parents feel more involved in the decision.
Good Luck.

I think that some different ways you would be able to get parents into the school environment would be to have some sort of parents night, or host a trainging workshop for parents one night after shool. This would get parent to meet one another and see where their children are learning.
When parents are giving you reasons as to why they are not able to come into the class and be involved I think you should ask questions and give choices for them to make it a little easier. It may not always work, but atleast you put the effort into getting them involved.
I know it can be difficult to get the results that you may want, but keep pushing and any progress you have made will make a difference in your cause. Good luck!

Lamon,
I am doing my presentation on Power Point; maybe you can do something like that for your team. What if you thought about an activity to do where the parents have to get from someone else? I think that this would be an idea to help them realize what it means for them to help and be involved with their children.

Lamon,
I feel that the best way to get parents involved is to reach out to them and forge relationships. Every family is different. I have one family that is very aloof. I now get them to say hello or smile. This is a big step! I know that this is harder on a bigger level. Some other things that I have done is send not only activities to do at home, but also very brief notes about what we are learning and how they can reinforce this at home. Basic realistic activities that can be incorporated into everyday life. Families are busy and most of the time I think that parents care, but may not know how to be involved. They equate parent participation to volunteering in the classroom. You need to come up with creative, unique ways to involve them. I'll brainstorm and get back to you.

I would not push parents who give reasons why they cannot be involved. Life is crazy and hectic and sometimes they just can not. I know I am not always available, and I have to tell people no. There are many ways to be involved, and those who want to will. Sometimes people just need to be given chances and shown different opportunities.
I hope you do well, my advocacy is similar :)
